Although we have only been talking about online anonimity as a bad thing in class, I believe that there are actually some benefits to it.
Many times people are afraid to speak out due to to their situation and may be harmed if their identity becomes known. The reality is many people don't have the liberty to speak out like any of us can about out thoughts and questions to others.
Online anonymity allows for free discussion among people without the possibility of having your name online and available after a single Google search.
However I also don't believe that online forums and websites should be able to comment anonymously and go rogue. Rather these websites should make an attempt to filter through their comments and reject the ones with lousy and rude messages.
What do you guys think? Are there other benefits to online anonymity? And do the posituves outweigh the negatives or not?
I totally agree with the fact that anonymity has benefits. It's true that sometimes, it's better if a person's identity goes unknown in order for them to truly speak their mind without being harassed. However, in my opinion, there are way more negatives than positives in this situation. It could go both ways though.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, there are more negatives than positives when it comes to anonymity online, and it is unfortunate because online anonymity can be good in certain situations. Not everyone feels comfortable speaking freely or openly about certain topics. So they use anonymity to avoid embarrassment or just for privacy. Either way people should be able to speak their mind without fear of being attacked or harassed online.
