Don't Feed the Trolls
Online trolling is a real issue that often times, isn't taken as serious as it should be. It’s a problem that’s becoming more serious as social media becomes a bigger part of our lives. I recently read an article called "Don't Feed the Haters: the Confessions of a Former Troll" where this guy, Paul Jun, exposes himself and the hateful things he used to do on the internet. He suggests that the only way to defeat the toll is the understand the troll. Basically, they do what they do because they're bored and they want attention. So, how do we eliminate trolls? Stop feeding them. Paul Jun puts it this way: it's part of our human nature to want to defend ourselves when someone unknown comes at us. We don't want to stay silent, because we think that means surrendering, and surrendering means losing. But really, that's just a bad philosophy. If someone is commenting hateful things online, don't engage them. Instead, try ignoring them. They're likely to get bored and move on. Many internet users are putting this idea to use. For example, the youtuber pewdiepie got rid of the comment section on his videos. This way, he prevents the hate from even happening in the first place. If you have to deal with trolling, which I'm sure you do, try to ignore them. Let's stop feeding the trolls. If they stop getting fed, they'll eventually die out.

I like the statement "the only way to beat the troll is to understand the troll". I think it is an interesting approach to the trolling situation, because to overcome something you need to understand why it is there or why it happens. It is easy for people to feel like they are surrendering when they stay quiet, but that is not the case. By staying quiet or trying to avoid the negativity you do not feed the trolls and give them the attention they are seeking.
