Teaching Students About Food

In this Ted talk, the speaker, Sam Kass, discusses the importance of teaching kids to be aware of their food. He argues that if no one teaches them, they will never learn. He points out how much better students do in school when they aren’t hungry, and instead, are fed nutritious food that benefits their body.
A student who is fed a nutritious breakfast that includes fruit and milk and is low in sugar and salt, will have to visit the nurse less, have lower levels of anxiety and depression, have a lower rate of obesity, have better behavior, have better attendance, and overall, do better in school. On the other hand, a student who is provided a breakfast that lacks nutrients and is high in sugar will have lower scores and will act out in class. Research has shown that kids who don’t have consistent nourishment, particularly at breakfast, have poor cognitive function overall. This is an issue that has invaded America and is negatively affecting the lives of thousands of students attending school.
In the ted talk, Kass discusses the program that has been successful in providing free, nutritious food to students across the country. When kids are given the nourishment they need, they are also given the chance to thrive, both in the classroom and beyond. Kass encourages his audience and this society as a whole to focus on the simple goal of properly nourishing ourselves to ensure that future generations can rely on a more stable and secure world. By teaching kids early on to be aware of what they are eating and to help them realize the benefits of healthy eating.

  1. This is really interesting and it makes me wonder about the nutrition and attitudes of students who often times have school lunch as their only meal all day. Something definitely needs to be done to provide these kids with better food that will boost their ability to thrive rather than bring them down. Our future really starts with us and the kids because if we change our ways and teach the kids how to live a better life, they will continue passing it down until our food system is improved.

  2. I watched this ted talk a couple of days ago and found it very interesting. I wish people made it a priority to teach kids about nutrition at a young age when we were little. I think a lot of these obesity problems we encounter today would be cut in half if we implemented more health education in the school system. I also think that it is very important we insure that our children are getting fed wholesome, nutritional meals so that they are able to reach their full potential in the classroom each and everyday. I think that our government should step in and provide healthier school lunches, so that our kids will learn about and live a healthy lifestyle.

  3. Education of food is really undervalued, especially by the public school system. I mean look at what they try to feed us in the cafeteria and they still try to pass that off as a healthy lunch. It's kinda sad.
