For my topic, I was very inspired by one of the articles we read Bad Food? Tax It, Subsidize Vegetables by Mark Bittman. In his article he said something that really resonated with me, "public health is the role of the government" (Bittman, 2) but what are they really doing to try and help resolve the problem? When I read that line it reminded me of this video I came across on my Facebook that compared kids in Japan and kids in America. In this video, it showed that kids in Japan are required to learn home economics and they ate clean nutritious foods whereas, kids in America constantly ate out and that their school lunches were just terrible for them. So from there I formulated my question, what should the government do to decrease our obesity rate for future generations? How are we going to work with our government in order to have a healthier future? Unless we do something, this problem is just going to increase and we need to improve the health and well being of our citizens.
In the article What’s the secret to Japan’s slender population? Serious ‘eating’ education it brought up a good point that, “while Japan's population is not as skinny as it was before the Big Mac came along, they're not as fat as us” (Nerman). The article discusses why that is because they educate their citizens about the foods they put in their body and they actually know how to cook so eating out isn’t such a consistent thing like it is here in America. We need to stop being lazy and just stay home and cook at home! What's the secret to Japan's slender population? Serious 'eating education'
