Change For The Better

So this Food Politics unit has got me thinking about things that I never thought I really need to pay attention to. Like advertisements. I always looked at those things as something to mock and use to start a conversation. Now, it's like one of those hypnotic swirls that makes you talk about it so you want to do something with it. If that makes any sense. I mean, the commercials selling products like candies or fast foods are trying to hypnotize you to make you wanna buy their products despite you knowing that it's unhealthy.
I've always considered myself a bit cynical and skeptical, but now I think I'm just disappointed (and ten times more cynical and skeptical). Personally, our country isn't the greatest nation that's ever been, but it has come close to doing many great things for its people than some other nations. Now I feel like our country is regressing because of the greed that corrupts so many brilliant minds in corporations. What I eat now, I can't fully enjoy without thinking about abusive animal farms or how I'm an active participant in this endless cycle of the food industry's games. My consciousness is not at ease about what I eat.
So far what I want to do to ease my consciousness is to start my own garden of vegetables and fruits. Hopefully I can start on it during, maybe, spring break. I want to do my part in appreciating the food that I have and grow. In order to live a better life, I need to change for the better starting with what I eat.

  1. I feel the same, if I ever get my own house I would want to plant my own trees and flowers, my mom has her own garden and its pretty amazing. I think a better way we can change our habits it to avoid false advertisements especially junk food, also research about our local food stores. We should also teach young children to be aware of harmful substances and teach them good habits to balance meals or to be able to pick out foods that are healthy.

    1. Yes, I agree. Also, that's really cool your mom has her own garden. My family and I tried to do that, but we didn't care for them as much as they need it and they died. Like doing something like that takes lots of hard work and attention.

  2. Starting your own garden sounds like a great way to ease your mind about what you eat. At least you'll know exactly where your food came from. Good luck and happy gardening.

  3. I completely agree with what you said about how we are all active participants in the food industry's games. Sometimes, when we see all the problems in the food industry, or other aspects of the world, it's easy to think that we can't change anything on our own. But the truth is that by not doing anything about it, we're still going with the flow of society, and in this case that's not a good thing. So I think it's super cool that you want to start your own garden it's a great way to do something about the situation. Keep it up!

  4. I definitely agree on the part in your blog post when you mentioned how we thought "America was the best nation ever" but in reality, we are getting some sort of censorship in all these advertisements that aren't all truthful! I always imagined citizens in developing nations to have a lack of knowledge in what the government is feeding them (literally and metaphorically), but in a way I feel that the US government isn't too far from creating some type of censorship from its citizens.

  5. Advertising candy and soda and all of that junk food is probably the only way companies can convince people to try their products. I feel that if it weren't for advertisements, people wouldn't be so attracted to buying unhealthy food and they would have a great diet without any of those unnecessary foods. Also, I think your plan to start your own garden is amazing. Keep up the awesomeness!
