This article explains the different factors that influence the reasons for how the environment affects our food choices. How social status are a major factor involving what we eat, how food preferences aren't the only reason we choose certain food but how cultures are a big part of the reason too. Attitudes, habits, how we eat, where we eat, are we eating alone are all part of the environment based research. Social people chose different things when people are around, whether it be healthy or more fattening. Research shows that we eat more when surrounded by others, whether it be friends or family we tend to order bigger portions and more food. Based on population sizes and the diversity within the communities defines the social standpoint of what environment is surrounding people who choose certain food. I chose this article because I feel that it enlightens certain topics about this question that I wouldn't have went so in depth with but it's interesting. Coming from a stable family with good income I don't notice my choices in food compared to those who are not in my same situation. With low income families research shows they eat less vegetables and fruits, which cause under-nutrition and being overweight. It's sad that just because you don't make a lot of money, your body and health have to be affected in a bad way. All because fake processed food is way cheaper than healthy food which every person should eat. Hopefully this article can inform us all about the significance of why we eat what we eat, so we can make a change.
The articles and TED Talks Ms. Fletcher has been showing in class also touched on this topic. I feel like this situation is a major reflection of the effect capitalism and industrialization have had on morality because the government does nothing to address these issues. The fact that low income families can only afford unhealthy substitutes for food is a matter the government should be addressing as part of promoting the general welfare. It's also saddening knowing it took millions dying of starvation for years for many organizations and programs to start to do something about it like urban farming in low income areas in order to distribute it among the citizens in need.
