My greatest fear is losing my way in my path of success.
Thinking back to the beginning year of my freshman year, college seemed so far from us. Yet, here I am as a senior about to apply to college. I still haven't felt any different from last year, but a lot has changed around me. Emotions, questions, deadlines, stress, built up thoughts, or worries seem to all spill out as senior year rolls around. My senior friends last year who went through the process before me struggled with balancing time between school work and preparing for their future. With so much on our hands, it seems impossible to meet up to expectations of parents and peers. Time is endless, but it seems so short; so much of our adolescence was spent into school. I believe it’s really hard for us as students to meet up to expectations when we are simply not prepared enough. Being a senior has pushed so much standards to keep up to, such as being an example, being mature, responsible, smart, "growing up" in general. It’s scary enough to think about having to fend for ourselves in the field of competitive jobs and "real world". Its ironic to say after high school is the real world, thats like saying we've been living in a lie this whole time. A few concerns I have are about going into college and after you graduate college. “ Do you think high school has prepared you for college as of right now?” Also, “What are your thoughts on meeting up to standards and expectations of others? (Such as your parents)” "What do you guys suggest in keeping motivation throughout college and further in life?”
I feel extremely unprepared college. There are so many questions I have and I feel as if there is no one to answer them. When I do ask, the person tells me I have to wait or figure it out on my own by calling someone else who may or may not know the question. OKAY SO ILL ASK RIGHT NOW. If I apply to a college and it says there is no application fee, is it apart of the ten FASFA colleges I clicked on in the beginning for applying for the FASFA? I have asked several people and they are unsure. I went to the career center to ask and they told me to wait until the after school event but I did not want to wait until then. I'm not sure, but I personally feel unprepared for college despite the fact I feel ready for some college experiences. Does that make sense? For motivation, I have myself to think about. I believe that is how everyone should look at college; to be able to support themselves through their college experiences. I motivate myself by thinking of all the things I will be able to achieve because I will have a college degree.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the answer to question because I'm as unsure as you are. I have to agree although there are counselors for help, I feel not all my questions can be answered. And yes, I do understand how you feel about college readiness, going into college I'm prepared to meet new people and gain experiences. But at the same time its nerve wrecking to think about all the changes and impact college will have on our lives. And thats a good point, keeping our goal in mind is a great way to keep motivation. Thank you and hope you figure everything out, we're all in the same boat but we'll definitely get through it all!
DeleteI feel like some of the classes that I've taken have prepared me for college, but there's also some classes that have not prepared me at all. For example, I've had multiple classes these past four years where the teacher just handed out worksheets. As I sat in my desk doing worksheet after worksheet I would think to myself, "How is this preparing me for college? Oh wait! It isn't!" That has definitely been one of the things that I've struggled with throughout high school. Looking back, I feel like I was capable of more. I feel like teachers could have done different things to push me academically, and ultimately prepare me for college.
ReplyDeleteLike Sam, I stay motivated just thinking about all of the things that I will be able to do with my college degree. I know that the road to getting that degree will be a really tough one, but I am ready to work my butt off to get it. I am also ready to pay my parents back for everything that they've done for me throughout my life. Once I finish college, get a job, and am stable, I plan to pay for my parents to go on a vacation. I'll send them wherever they want to go. The idea of giving back to them is something that will keep me going through the tough times that are sure to come my way during college.
I definitely agree with giving back to our parents, they have done so much for us its only right to give something in turn for them. Yes, I also agree with the fact that some classes I've taken hasn't benefitted me much. School should have classes that deal with finance or even culinary. We should have classes that tie into college majors so we as students have an idea in our interests and be able to try out different things.
DeleteI feel that high school just talks a lot about college but it never really does much to prepare us for it. The only things I feel that have allowed us to get ready for college are AP classes. Aside from that, high school didn't do much besides just shove the idea of college into my face. Before senior year, I wasn't really aware of the steps I would have to take to get into college and I feel that is something that should have been covered a couple years in advance. But it's not just college. What has high school even done to help us learn living skills like cooking, driving, doing taxes, etc.? I feel that high school was just a pass-time activity as most of the classes I've taken weren't AP and I'll probably have to retake them in college. As for expectations, I feel completely pressured by the ones my mom has of me and therefore have a severe phobia of letting her down. Finally, for motivation in the future, I'd say to just keep the special people in your life in mind. I would encourage you to never stop dreaming and keep trying to make those dreams a reality.
